Fostering Talent in Detroit

Business Engagement Center + Quicken Loans

Quicken Loans, the nation’s largest online retail mortgage lender and the fourth largest retail home lender in the United States, is known as a Detroit corporate powerhouse. The company is also leading the charge to keep talent in Michigan by bringing in more than 1,000 interns to their headquarters in Detroit this past summer, including 174 from U-M.

“Quicken Loans’ intern initiative is a commitment we made to attract and retain local talent, like students from the University of Michigan, and to stop the migration of graduates to other urban centers outside the state,” said Michelle Salvatore, director of recruiting for Quicken Loans. “It is probably one of the more important initiatives we’ve undertaken that is adding to Detroit’s brain gain.”

Detroit Quicken Loans Interns

In July 2013, 200 U-M interns working in Detroit attended a celebration hosted by Quicken Loans. The Intern in Detroit event, held on the Madison building’s rooftop terrace overlooking Comerica Park and Ford Field, helped expose students to career opportunities in the city and throughout Michigan by introducing them to Detroit business leaders and U-M alumni working downtown.

“At Quicken Loans, we’re always looking for passionate candidates who are motivated to help, learn, and make a difference,” said Salvatore. “Many of the University of Michigan students possess these qualities and U-M’s Business Engagement Center helps us make the connection.”

“Quicken Loans is an excellent example of a Michigan-based company drawing from each U-M campus and because of this, they are retaining top tier talent in the state,” explains Business Engagement Center Director Nell Dority. “In turn, this adds value to the company and further deepens our mutually-beneficial partnership.”
