U-M President Domenico Grasso says the U-M Detroit Center’s mission remains — “…to work together to strengthen Detroit and its people, advancing the public good.”

What started as primarily office space for U-M researchers whose work centered on Detroit has grown into a community space after 20 years of change and innovation.

The center celebrated its 20th anniversary with remarks from university leaders, community leaders and researchers, a poetry reading, presentations from Semester in Detroit students along with dance and music performances.

“This is our moment as a university to demonstrate our value and commitment to the citizens of Detroit and beyond,” said President Domenico Grasso. “I always want this region to look to Michigan for discovery, collaboration, and impact. And look to us for talented graduates who are eager to make a difference in the community with their ideas and experiences.”

Grasso noted that the university’s first building near Bates and Larned in 1817 was about two miles away from the center at Woodward and Parsons.

“Today, more than 200 years later, the University of Michigan can be found throughout the city. That includes the School at Marygrove and the unique opportunities to provide for students, as well as the U-M Center for Innovation that is rising along Grand River. We are all looking forward to the building’s opening in 2027 and its potential to have a deeper impact on the city’s economy.”
