The city of Detroit is the University of Michigan’s birthplace and it holds a special place in the fabric of this institution. The University has a 200-year history with Detroit—this shared history includes scholarly study, engaged learning opportunities for students, and a rich landscape of continued engagement that now includes student organizations, courses, k-12 programming, community-academic research, and more. We are committed to working and learning alongside leaders in Detroit and pursuing partnerships that help us accomplish our mission of serving communities and advancing the public good.

Over the last two centuries, our engagement with Detroit and its residents has grown to include partnerships with community members, local businesses, neighborhoods, government officials, and nonprofit organizations. Our partnerships with Detroit are grounded in equity and recognition for the expertise and resources within the community. We are forever grateful for the city’s generosity in helping our students learn, and in helping our scholars develop new knowledge and ideas.
