Brightmoor Maker Space

Working with Brightmoor community partners, the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, and Detroit Community Schools, the Brightmoor Maker Space is a place for residents, particularly young people, to improve their making skills, develop intergenerational connections, and nurture community revitalization.

A collaboration between Detroit Community Schools and the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, the Brightmoor Maker Space opened in 2018, transforming a formerly vacant 3,200 square-foot building into a place for youth and adults to build their creative making skills and incubate business ideas.

Located in the Brightmoor neighborhood of northwest Detroit, the makerspace enables community members — and young people in particular — to develop creative confidence, improve their making skills, foster intergenerational connections, and nurture community revitalization. Making activities fostered by the space include screen printing, bike and trike building, wood working, gardening, and much more. A spirit of entrepreneurship permeates all of the space’s activities and programs.

The outcome of a long-running partnership between DCS, Stamps, the Sunbridge International Collaborative, the makerspace is the brainchild of Stamps professor Nick Tobier and Bart Eddy, co-founder of DCS and Sunbridge International. The makerspace is open to the public and made possible by generous donations from numerous foundations, businesses, and nonprofits.
