Semester in Detroit

Semester in Detroit (SID) was founded in 2009 by U-M students for U-M students. The program is an immersive experience in which U-M undergraduates live, learn, and work within Detroit for one semester. During this time, students engage in rigorous academic study at the U-M Detroit Center, where course offerings include history, writing, urban planning, and more. The offered courses fulfill most requirements for U-M’s Urban Studies minor, should a student choose to complete the minor once they return to campus.

Additionally, SID students gain professional experience through Detroit-based internships, which serve to create and maintain reciprocal relationships between U-M students and the Detroit community. This program is available to U-M undergraduates during Fall and Spring semesters.
