The Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning recognized June Manning Thomas, Centennial Professor Emerita of urban and regional planning and Mary Frances Berry Distinguished University Professor of urban planning, with a Distinguished Educator Award. The award recognizes significant contributions to the planning field.

The University of Michigan Detroit Center has been selected for the 2019 Best of Detroit Award in the Educational Institution category by the Detroit Award Program.

Three University of Michigan faculty members are part of a team who won an international design competition that will unite 12 cultural and educational institutions located in Detroit’s Midtown and change the way visitors and Detroiters experience the area.

It was his work with Detroit Sip and becoming a regular face at block club meetings, that resulted in Bill Lovejoy winning a Spirit of Detroit award from the Detroit City Council in 2018. The University of Michigan has inducted two new members to its Detroiter Hall of Fame — Cynthia Stephens and Charles Adams — and also recognized Dexter Mason as an emerging leader in the city plus honored Barbara Israel as a faculty member who has shown outstanding service to the community.

Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, a Detroit native and resident, graduated from U-M in 2005 with a BSE in computer engineering. “Like you,” he told the Kessler Scholars, “I attended the University of Michigan on scholarship. A scholarship prepares you and positions you for a new set of opportunities. Be open to those opportunities and possibilities.”
